Life was rough in a company town, especially when your wife will not let you into her clean house until you scrub off all of the dirt and grime collected during a hard days work in the mine.  In the days before indoor plumbing, the washtub was one way to get a bath, and if you were very polite, you might be lucky enough to get some hot water added to the tub!
